September 24th DFC Virtual Safety and Social Meeting

All are welcome to join Desert Flying Club at our first virtual monthly safety meeting Thursday, September 24th at 7pmDue to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we will be holding this gathering virtuallyEveryone is welcome – members & non-members alike!  We will not be meeting in the clubhouse, click the link below to attend.

Desert Flying Club is excited to have Josh Harkness present on currency vs. proficiency.  One of the missions of DFC is to promote safety in general aviation in the Las Vegas area.  Josh will discuss the difference between flying legally and current, but maybe not proficient.  AOPA states “Proficiency, by definition, means performing a given skill with expert correctness. In contrast, currency simply refers to being up to date or occurring within a recent period of time. These definitions are useful in illustrating the point that being current in a particular task does not necessarily imply proficiency at that task, If we apply these definitions to the recency of experience requirements specified in the regulations, it becomes evident that a pilot. while legally current, may not be adequately proficient in certain critical flight skills to act as pilot in command.”  In the presentation, you will learn how to maintain proficiency and be a safe pilot in all aspects of your flying.

This seminar counts toward WINGS credit.

October 17th Safety Meeting

All are welcome to join Desert Flying Club at our monthly safety meeting Thursday, October 17th at 7pm.  As usual, it will be held at our clubhouseEveryone is welcome – members & non-members alike!

At just over 60 miles from Henderson, NV, the Grand Canyon offers stunning views, great hiking trails, and amazing places to eat and visit.  Because of the National Park, the FAA has established specific flight corridors and altitudes that must be flown around the canyon.  Also, several the airports surrounding the canyon are over a mile above sea level, giving consideration for calculating density altitude.  Many tour operators in the canyon create a challenge for GA pilots to see and avoid and navigate in their territory.  Josh Harkenss and Kevin Kirkendall will discuss flying in and around the Grand Canyon.

We will also be announcing our next Poker Run, which involves flying to several airports around the Grand Canyon.  During this time of year, you’ll experience some of the best flying weather and opportunity to fly this scenic route we’ve developed, along with winning some great prizes.  Come to the safety meeting to find out how to enter the Poker Run!

September 19th Safety Meeting

All are welcome to join Desert Flying Club at our monthly safety meeting Thursday, September 19th at 7pm.  As usual, it will be held at our clubhouseEveryone is welcome – members & non-members alike!

Before you hear the words, cleared for takeoff, there are many steps a pilot must take to ensure a safe and successful flight.  Preparing the pilot in command, the passengers and aircraft is essential for every flight.  Josh Harkness will be teaching us proper techniques for pre-flight actions and briefings.  Doing this right will reduce the potential for accidents or incidents on every flight you take so you can truly have happy skies and safely landings.

We hope many of you can make it out this time. Questions? Email: board@desertflying.club
